Welcome to The Knowledge to Nourish!

Welcome to The Knowledge to Nourish!

Hello World!

Welcome to The Knowledge to Nourish- a blog about childhood nutrition geared towards moms…but dads are welcome, too! I’m Jackie, a registered dietitian and stay-at-home mom of one wild little sweet pea.  This blog will be a non-judgemental space where parents can get honest nutrition information and support for feeding their kids.

I’m a dietitian and certified specialist in pediatric nutrition — so you would think feeding my child would be a breeze for me, right?…

WRONG.

Breastfeeding was hard.  Way harder than I imagined.  Then came solids. And sure, I knew what to feed my daughter, but how is a different story.  Even with all the tactics I knew, I still questioned if I was doing and saying the right things to support my daughter’s eating and attitude towards food.  And I felt that frustration of researching the perfect baby food recipe, with the perfect ratio of nutrients, and exhaustively cooking and pureeing — just to watch my daughter push it around her high chair tray and throw it on the floor.

I know my efforts were worth it….but in the moment, tears were shed by all.  I quickly learned that feeding is easier said than done.

I know I’m not alone in this, and I know we ALL need support.  I’ve learned a lot since then that has given me a lot more confidence and less stress when it comes to feeding my daughter.  I will continue to expand my expertise and share my knowledge with you, so you can do your best when it comes to feeding your child AND feel great about it.

Why Did I Create This Blog?

For one, nutrition is my passion! Specifically nutrition for babies and kids.  I took time away from my career for the past 2 years to be home with my daughter (which has been wonderful!), but I miss my field of work and helping others.

Secondly, I want to make feeding less stressful and more positive, so you can enjoy this precious time of watching your child grow and develop.  I’m here to do the research and break it down for you, so you can grab it and go.

Of course, I want to provide guidance on what to feed kids,  but I’ll also focus on how to feed kids (which may be what is needed more).  Research actually shows that parents generally know what to feed kids, but there seems to be a gap in understanding how to do it while encouraging healthy eating habits.  In the diet culture we live in today, we have really lost sight of how to eat normally and have a healthy relationship with food.  We need to get it right for our kids.  A healthy relationship with food is equally important to a healthy diet.  I also believe they go hand in hand, and it starts from the beginning.

My goal is to provide:

    • Reliable answers to your biggest (or smallest) nutrition questions
    • Positive solutions to your feeding struggles
    • Meal and snack ideas that are quick, easy and healthy
    • Reviews and recommendations for food products and feeding supplies
    • Support, understanding and friendship – from one mom who gets it to another

Lastly, my blog is not about feeding and eating perfectly because that’s not reality.  Believe me,  dietitians let their kids eat cookies, too, and cake and pizza and candy…because we know that all foods can fit into a healthy diet. So no pressure or judgment over here to live up to impossible standards. I’m doing my best, and I know you’re doing yours.
